The Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) aims to foster healthy, vibrant communities across Alberta. The program has been designed to support the efforts of non-profit organizations that contribute to their communities and to create opportunities for Albertans to engage with their communities. Specifically, local facility enhancement needs and works in partnership with eligible non-profit organizations to assist communities with the renewal, expansion, purchase or build of public-use community facilities.
Due to equipment failure in the fall of 2022 forced the the MHCC had to cancel the entire 2022/2023 curling season and shut its doors. The lifespan of the facility is dependent on the Centre having the ability to install ice as soon as possible so that it can re-open to the public. The Centre's situation is urgent, and rink floor mats and a new ice plant would allow the Club to install ice and re-open. The equipment has an expected lifespan of 30 years.
The facility enhancement that the Medicine Hat Curling Club will undergo will generate an economic impact of approximately $355,000 to local contractors and trade companies. An additional approximate $1,385,000 will be paid to the Calgary office of CIMCO Refrigeration. The entire cost of the project will be paid out to Alberta-based companies. In total the project will cost around $1.7 million, with just over half coming from funding provided by the government.
Both the rink floor mats and new ice plant are required before the Club can re-open to the community. The Club's project cannot be scaled back or done in phases as the ice can only be installed once both pieces of equipment are purchased and installed.
The Board of Directors and staff of the Medicine Hat Curling Centre extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Alberta for its generous support and commitment to recreational facilities across the province. Thanks to this significant contribution, curling has not only returned to our community but is thriving once again. We remain dedicated to promoting the sport of curling, fostering fair play, ensuring equal opportunities, and strengthening our community.
